INDUSTRIAL TURNS TRENDY IN TWO SEATTLE NEIGHBORHOODS

Courtesy of Sounders FC

SODO

This hip strip of former warehouses buzzes with exciting craft beverage makers and eclectic restaurants.

Explore

Just south of the neighborhood’s border with Pioneer Square you’ll find the state-of-the-art sports stadiums Lumen Field (800 Occidental Ave S), for football and soccer, and T-Mobile Park (1250 First Ave S) for baseball. If their feats of athleticism inspire you to want to work out, Momentum Indoor Climbing (2759 First Ave S) tests your grip strength. In the evening, catch a memorable performance at the renowned Showbox SoDo (1700 First Ave S) music club.

Eat and Drink

Car enthusiasts should put it in park at Derby (2233 Sixth Ave S), where they can nosh on garlic fries or a fried Korean chicken sando while sneaking a peek at the impressive members-only car club next door. Paseo (1760 First Ave S) serves rave-worthy Caribbean roast sandwiches, and Macrina Bakery (1943 First Ave S) dishes out heavenly breakfast fare, such as sausage biscuit sandwiches with Beecher’s cheddar and vegan raspberry-oat scones. Try the hearty Franny Freeburg pastrami sandwich on a rye bagel at Blazing Bagels (1911 First Ave S), which also sells decadent caramel-fudge brownies and other sweet treats. Inside Starbucks headquarters, Starbucks Reserve SODO (H2401 Utah Ave S) delivers an unforgettable cafe experience with pizzas, cocktails, craft coffee, and nitro cold brew on tap. Efeste (1730 First Ave S), Latta Wines (3933 1st Ave S), and Structure Cellars (3861 First Ave S) are among SoDo’s many superb winery tasting rooms.

Shop

The handsome Filson (1741 First Ave S) flagship began outfitting outdoors adventurers—and Klondike Gold Rush prospectors—in 1897. Many of its products are made right here in Seattle. Hunt for stained-glass windows, unique lamps, and vintage decorative accents at Earthwise Architectural Salvage (3447 Fourth Ave S).

GEORGETOWN

This offbeat, art-filled neighborhood beckons with delicious eats and inviting greenspaces.

Explore

Just south of the runways at Boeing Field, The Museum of Flight (9404 E Marginal Way S) presents the city’s rich aviation history in a family-friendly wonderland of big planes, hands-on exhibits, and interactive and experiences. Tech geeks can nerd out at Connections Museum Seattle (7000 E Marginal Way S), showcasing antique telephones and switchboards, while the 1906 Georgetown Steam Plant (6605 13th Ave S) is now a museum filled with the massive machinery that once powered the city’s streetcar fleet; it’s open the second Saturday of each month. For an Insta-worthy photo op, head to Oxbow Park (6430 Corson Ave S) to glimpse a larger-than-life cowboy hat and boots.

Eat and Drink

Order an authentic cheese-steak sandwich—loyalists always order it with Cheez Whiz—from the takeout window at Calozzi’s Cheesesteaks (7016 E Marginal Way S) or a Japanese-style hamburger at the original location of local chain Katsu Burger (6538 Fourth Ave S). Just be sure to save room for a slice of the famed London Fog cake—with Earl Grey syrup and bergamot mascarpone cream—from Deep Sea Sugar & Salt (6235 Airport Way S). Creative Pacific Northwest fare is served at The Corson Building (H5609 Corson Ave S), which occupies a romantic 1910 house. Georgetown Liquor Company (5501 Airport Way S B) serves cool drinks and tasty vegan fare, and Slim’s Last Chance (5606 First Ave S) is known for live music and stick-to-your-ribs Tex-Mex.

Shop

Discover pop-up shops, unique art galleries, and more at the whimsical Georgetown Trailer Park Mall (5805 Airport Way S). Shop for comics and graphic novels at the Fantagraphics Bookstore and Gallery (1201 S Vale St), which shares a space with popular Georgetown Records. Kirk Albert Vintage Furnishings (5517 Airport Way S) is your go-to for mid-century modern and other vintage decor.
